It’s odd but also sadly true that when someone is ‘nice’ to us, we start wondering why; instead of embracing the person’s kindness, we question his or her motives and are suspicious whether he or she has a hidden agenda we don’t know about.
Recently, I came across a question online on one of those human resources sites that said “can a manager be too nice?”To my surprise, several people had commented saying ‘yes’ that a manager shouldn’t be too nice with his or her staff because he or she would be taken advantage of. Alas, why is it that when a manager/leader is nice this attribute is looked upon as a weakness? Being kind to our colleagues, team members, and everyone with whom we come in contact with actually, is an indispensable attribute. Kindness is not a weakness but a gift. Next time, when a colleague or a manager is kind to you, accept it and embrace it. There’s a reason for the old saying “we can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” The same concept applies to people. The nicer you are with those around you, the more you will be liked and as a result, your team will be willing to help you out when you need their support. This may sound like you are manipulating people, but that’s not the case. Kindness has to be genuine and come from the heart. Otherwise, your actions will raise doubt and eventually work against you. The more kindness we spread around, the better place this world will be to live in and, without any doubt, we will receive more abundance in our own life in return. |
